Rough Sketches
Lesson 1 of 5 Mech Design
In this lesson Gavin will help you to come up with a mech design that looks cool while still feeling like it could exist. Then you’ll create multiple rounds of rough sketches to brainstorm the design.
Aesthetics Practice Homework
Sketch over the provided template (available in this lesson’s downloadable files) to create 3 box designs using mech aesthetics. Have fun with these and experiment with different looks. You can also refer to the included example sheet to see Gavin’s own box designs.
For extra credit, create your own box shapes and apply designs to those as well.
Brief Building Homework
Using the methods Gavin laid out during this lesson, come up with a concept for your mech, then research and gather reference, building a moodboard as you go.
For extra credit, try designing a mech without weaponry. This will present its own unique problems to solve and will require extra effort in order to make the design look cool.
Rough Silhouette Sketches Homework
Create 1-2 pages of small silhouette sketches for your mech, exploring as many different kinds of shapes and ideas as you can. Then pick your favorites and place them onto a single page for later refinement.
Rough Line Art Homework
Add line art to your mech designs, sketching over your favorite silhouettes. Then try combining the designs by taking body parts from one mech and placing them on top of another. Be loose and really experiment with ideas at this stage, in order to stumble onto happy accidents!
